WAFCON 2026: Competition Just Beginning for Super Falcons, Says Madugu

Head Coach of the Super Falcons, Justine Madugu, has declared that the competition is only just beginning for Nigeria despite the team's emphatic 6-2 victory over Egypt, which secured qualification for the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Nigeria produced a commanding display to overcome the Egyptian ladies from a difficult position, booking a place in the last eight where they will face the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in what promises to be a thrilling quarter-final encounter.

Speaking after the victory, Madugu praised his players for their resilience and fighting spirit but stressed that there is no room for complacency.

"The competition is just starting for us," the Super Falcons coach said, adding that every match from the knockout stage would be tougher as all the remaining teams are determined to win the continental title.

Madugu noted that while the convincing win over Egypt has boosted the team's confidence, the focus has now shifted to Cameroon.

He emphasized the need for discipline, tactical awareness and maximum concentration against the Indomitable Lionesses, who have a rich history in African women's football.

The coach expressed confidence in his players' ability to rise to the challenge, urging them to maintain the winning mentality that has brought them this far in the tournament.

The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to the quarter-final clash against Cameroon, with a place in the semi-finals at stake as Nigeria continues its quest for another Women's Africa Cup of Nations title.
