The President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, is set to seek another term in office later this year, a move that could see him extend his leadership of the country's Olympic movement to about 25 years.

Several sports stakeholders have thrown their weight behind Gumel's expected re-election bid, describing his wealth of experience and international influence as major assets for Nigerian sports.

According to those supporting his return, Gumel's standing within the global Olympic movement, particularly his role as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has continued to give Nigeria greater visibility and representation on the international stage.

They believe his extensive network and long-standing relationship with key international sports administrators have attracted opportunities for Nigerian athletes and sports federations, while strengthening the country's voice in global sports governance.

The stakeholders also argued that continuity in leadership would help the Nigeria Olympic Committee consolidate on ongoing programmes aimed at athlete development, Olympic preparation and international partnerships.

However, Gumel's decision to seek another term is expected to generate discussions within the sports community, with some calling for continuity while others advocate for a new generation of leadership ahead of the NOC elections later this year.
