Bayelsa-born wrestler and multiple-time African and National Champion, Mercy Genesis, has expressed profound appreciation to the Bayelsa State Government for recognising her among 30 Sports Legends honoured as part of activities marking the state’s 30th anniversary.
Genesis, who received a special award for her outstanding contribution and achievements in sports, described the recognition as a great honour and a strong motivation to continue giving her best for Bayelsa State and Nigeria.
The accomplished wrestler particularly applauded Governor Douye Diri for his continued support for sports and for recognising athletes who have brought honour and pride to the state through their achievements.
She also commended the State Commissioner for Sports, Champion Daniel Igali, for his tireless commitment to the development of sports and athletes in Bayelsa.
According to Genesis, being named among the 30 Sports Legends is not only a celebration of her past achievements but also an opportunity to do more, work harder and continue making Bayelsa State and Nigeria proud.
She noted that recognition of athletes can inspire the younger generation to believe in their abilities and pursue excellence in sports.
The multiple African and National Champion pledged to remain committed to her career and continue serving as a worthy ambassador of Bayelsa State and Nigeria on the national and international stage.
Genesis said the honour would remain a cherished moment in her career, adding that it has further strengthened her determination to achieve greater things in the years ahead.
“This recognition means a lot to me. It is not just an award; it is a reminder that my efforts and sacrifices have not gone unnoticed. I am grateful to the Bayelsa State Government, Governor Douye Diri and Champion Daniel Igali. This will encourage me to do more and continue to make Bayelsa and Nigeria proud,” she said.
