The International Judo Federation (IJF) has expressed support for steps being taken to address governance issues within the Nigeria Judo Federation (NJF), welcoming the establishment of a Caretaker Committee and efforts to ensure a transparent, fair and inclusive electoral process.
In a letter dated October 9, 2026, from Budapest, Hungary, and addressed to the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, the IJF acknowledged receipt of his correspondence dated September 25, 2026, concerning the administrative status of the Nigeria Judo Federation.
The letter, signed by the IJF Secretary General, Dr Lisa Allan, confirmed that the international governing body had taken note of the dissolution of the NJF Board and the assumption of responsibilities by the federation's Secretary General, Ms Ngozi.
The IJF also acknowledged the establishment of a Caretaker Committee with the mandate to amend the Nigeria Judo Federation's Constitution and convene an electoral General Assembly (GA).
According to the letter, the international body also noted that members of the Caretaker Committee had undertaken not to contest in the forthcoming election.
IJF SUPPORTS TRANSPARENT ELECTION
Welcoming the steps taken to address the governance concerns within the federation, the IJF expressed confidence that the process would be conducted in line with applicable regulations and requirements.
The international governing body emphasised the importance of ensuring a transparent, fair and inclusive electoral process, signalling its support for efforts to restore proper governance within Nigerian judo.
The IJF further wished the NSC success in managing the process and requested regular updates on developments.
"We look forward to continued cooperation," the letter stated, reaffirming the international federation's commitment to maintaining a working relationship with the Nigerian sports authorities.
NSC'S ROLE IN JUDO GOVERNANCE
The development represents an important step in the ongoing efforts to address administrative and governance matters within the Nigeria Judo Federation.
The IJF's response acknowledges the measures communicated by the NSC and underscores the importance of conducting the proposed constitutional amendments and electoral process in accordance with the relevant regulations.
With the international body requesting further updates, attention will now be on the implementation of the Caretaker Committee's mandate and the convening of the NJF electoral General Assembly.
The outcome of the process is expected to be significant for the future administration and development of judo in Nigeria.
