HAPPY BIRTHDAY ALAOWEI OPUKEME: A POLITICIAN, SPORTS ENTHUSIAST AND MAN OF MANY PORTFOLIOS
By Ohis Asein
When you talk about a man whose life journey cuts across politics, public administration, sports, journalism, and community service, Alaowei Opukeme is certainly a name worth celebrating.
Today, I celebrate my friend, Alaowei Opukeme, a politician, an All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart in Bayelsa State, a seasoned administrator, and a sports enthusiast whose story reflects versatility, resilience, and a deep passion for service.
FROM LOCAL GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATION TO GOVERNMENT HOUSE
Alaowei Opukeme has built an impressive profile through his involvement in public service and political administration.
His previous positions include Supervisory Councillor for Health in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Chairman of a Local Government Area, Special Adviser to the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, State Focal Person for the Presidential Amnesty Programme, and Senior Special Assistant.
He currently serves as Technical Adviser on Sports Development, a position that aligns with his longstanding passion for sports and his understanding of the sector.
These positions reflect a career that has taken him through different levels of governance, administration, and public engagement.
A POLITICIAN AND APC STALWART IN BAYELSA
Beyond his administrative experience, Opukeme remains active in the political space as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He serves as State Director of Mobilisation and Coordinator of the Yenagoa LGA City Boy Movement, roles that place him within the political mobilisation structure of the party.
His political journey is another important chapter in his story, reflecting his involvement in party activities and the broader political landscape of Bayelsa State.
A SPORTS JOURNALIST WHO HAS SEEN THE WORLD
One remarkable aspect of Alawei Opukeme's life is his connection with sports.
As a freelance sports journalist, he has travelled extensively, with experience covering five FIFA World Cups and several Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
Such exposure offers opportunities to witness football at the highest level, meet people from different backgrounds, and appreciate the global nature of sports.
His experience in sports journalism, combined with his current role as Technical Adviser on Sports Development, gives him a unique perspective on the relationship between sports, administration, and development.
THE FOOTBALLER AND WRESTLER WHOSE DREAMS WERE CUT SHORT
Before his journey through public service, politics, and journalism, Alaowei Opukeme was also a good footballer and wrestler.
Unfortunately, an accident cut short his sporting career, bringing an unexpected change to what might have been a different journey in competitive sports.
However, life sometimes takes people along paths they never originally imagined. Although his active sporting ambitions were interrupted, his connection with sports has endured through journalism and sports administration.
Today, his continued involvement in the sector is a reminder that a passion for sports can find expression in different ways, even when circumstances change the original dream.
A MAN OF MANY PORTFOLIOS, A STORY WORTH TELLING
From local government administration to political mobilisation, from the Presidential Amnesty Programme to sports development, and from the football pitch to the international sports media environment, Alaowei Opukeme has gathered experiences across several fields.
As he celebrates another birthday, I celebrate not only the offices he has occupied but also the journey, experiences, and determination behind his story.
As a friend, I wish him greater accomplishments, good health, wisdom, and more opportunities to contribute to Bayelsa State and the development of Nigerian sports.
Happy Birthday, my friend, Alaowei Opukeme!
May the years ahead bring greater opportunities, renewed strength, and many more reasons to celebrate.
Happy Birthday to a politician, an APC stalwart, a sportsman, a well-travelled freelance sports journalist, and a man of many Portfolios
