GOVERNOR OKPEBHOLO MUST ACT : SPORTS IS NOT A RETIRING JOB
Ohis Asein
Governor Monday Okpebholo must understand that sports is not a retiring job. Athletes dedicate years of their lives, sacrifice comfort, endure injuries and travel long distances to represent their state and country.
When they win, the rewards and promises made to them should not remain on paper.
The ₦50 million announced for the victorious Edo Queens is a welcome gesture, but there is growing concern that the reward, considering the number of players, coaches, backroom staff and other contributors involved, may not be enough to properly recognise their historic achievement.
More importantly, information reaching FAKS MEDIA indicates that some Edo athletes who have previously brought honour and glory to the state are still waiting for rewards promised to them by the state government.
The situation is even more concerning with reports that athletes who won medals at the Niger Delta Games are yet to receive their promised rewards, while some athletes who were promised employment are still waiting for those promises to be fulfilled.
This is not just about money. It is about morale, motivation and fairness.
If athletes give their best for Edo State and fulfil their part of the bargain, the government must also fulfil its own commitments. Failure to do so could discourage athletes and may eventually push some of Edo's best talents to seek opportunities in other states where they believe the reward system is more reliable.
Governor Okpebholo still has the opportunity to correct this situation.
The Edo Queens have just written their names in history by winning both the Nigeria Women's Football League and the WAFU B Champions League. They will now represent the region at the main CAF Women's Champions League in South Africa.
This is not the time to allow uncertainty over rewards to affect their confidence.
A motivated athlete gives everything. A discouraged athlete begins to question whether the sacrifice is worth it.
My appeal to Governor Monday Okpebholo is simple: please review the reward system for Edo athletes, settle outstanding promises and ensure that every athlete who has brought glory to the state receives what was promised.
Edo has sporting talents. What they need is a government that will reward excellence, honour its promises and give athletes a reason to continue fighting for the state.
Sports is not a retiring job. The reward for representing Edo must be as important as the expectation to win for Edo.
