Commonwealth Games: Big night for Amusan in Glasgow for 100m hurdles gold

… as Ogazi, Udo, Ella qualify for 400m finals

It will be a big night for the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) as one of its favourites, world record holder, Tobi Amusan, will race in the final of the 100m hurdles to reclaim her title won in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Amusan ran the fastest time of 12.19secs in the Heat earlier today to book her place in the final billed for 9:49 pm tonight. Tobi Amusan is going for gold in the race.

Also tonight, veteran shot put thrower, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, will file out and go for a medal in the men’s Shot Put final at 9pm.

On Friday, tomorrow, 400m hurdler, Ezekiel Nathaniel who recorded the fastest time across the Heat will also go for gold in his final race.

Earlier today, the trio of Samuel Ogazi, Edidiong Udo and Ella Onojuvwevwo, qualified for the 400m finals for men and women scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2026.

Ogazi posted the overall fastest time of 44:52secs across the men’s three semi finals to book his place in the final.

In the women’s semi finals, Ella recorded the second fastest time of 51:47secs in a controlled race and has a bright chance to win a medal on Saturday.

The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, said the outstanding performance of the athletes represents a new era of athletics in Nigeria.

Okowa, has hailed the sheer determination and patriotism of the track and field athletes at the ongoing Commonwealth Games, expressing the confidence that they will do well.

“I am happy with the results we are seeing. This shows our potential. We are praying for yet another gold tonight from athletics. I am aware the National Sports Commission is full of expectations and I know Tobi Amusan will deliver tonight. In Shot put tonight too, Chukwuebuka, will have a podium finishing. Ezekiel Nathaniel is shinning brightly in 400m hurdles”, Okowa stated.

He added: “This morning in the 400 metres race, our athletes did well not minding that veteran Patience Okon-George and Esther Joseph didn’t qualify for the final in the women’s race. Ella Onojuvwevwo showed the great stuff she is made of, that indomitable Nigerian spirit.

Samuel Ogazi, was in the world of his own, what a strong statement of intent. Edidiong Udo rose to the occasion to book his place in the 400m men’s final too. In Javelin, Nnamdi Chinecherem and Decathlon Jami Schlueter,are giving good accounts of themselves. This is good for Nigeria.”

Okowa appreciated the partnership between the NSC and AFN which has translated into a massive support to the athletes representing the country at the Games.
