AFN Urges Athletes to Avoid Multiple Agents, Warns Against Disputes

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has urged Nigerian athletes to desist from the practice of signing agreements with multiple agents, warning that such arrangements often create unnecessary disputes among agents and could bring the sport into disrepute.

The Federation said athletes must exercise caution when engaging agents and ensure that they fully understand the terms and conditions of any representation agreement before signing.

According to the AFN, the growing incidence of athletes having contractual relationships with more than one agent has become a source of rancour, misunderstanding and conflict within the athletics community.

The Federation stressed that athletes should maintain transparency in their dealings with agents and avoid commitments that could result in competing claims over their representation, contracts, sponsorships and other professional opportunities.

The AFN further called on athletes to seek proper guidance where necessary before entering into representation agreements, noting that the reputation and integrity of Nigerian athletics must remain a collective responsibility.

It warned that disputes between athletes and agents, or between competing agents representing the same athlete, can negatively affect the image of the sport and distract athletes from their primary responsibility of preparing and competing at the highest level.

The Federation therefore appealed to athletes to act professionally, respect contractual obligations and avoid any practice capable of creating unnecessary controversy within Nigerian athletics.
